The vehicle was originally fitted with a Land Rover 2.5TD and I'm particularly interested to know what ancilliary fixtures and fittings are likely to be original and what's specific to the engine. I'm also trying to find from what vehicle the new engine might have been sourced. I think the conversion may have been done by Frogs Island 4x4 but it seems that they haven't offered it for a few years now and nobody there knows anything about them Attached File(s) Ebay5.jpg (85.15K) Number of downloads: 50 Darren 2001 Freelander TD4 GS station wagon 2002 Discovery II TD5 ES (belongs to my darling wife) www.landroveranorak.com Back to top of the page up there ^ #2 western Recovery Man Group: Moderators Posts: 19,384 Joined: 06-August 05 Location:Cornwall,UK Posted 27 October 2007 - 08:08 AM IIRC Frank Elson had one of those engines in his now sold 110 & I believe that Frog Island fitted it, maybe worth dropping him a e.mail Frank Elson asking for his thoughts on the engine, This post has been edited by western: 27 October 2007 - 08:12 AM Ralph,M3WRM,MSA Recovery Operator -- Western Recovery [Motorsport] Defender Forum Moderator Keep LR4x4.com Independent -- you can help by Clicking Here Back to top of the page up there ^ #3 Litch Old Hand Group: Settled In Posts: 450 Joined: 02-July 06 Posted 27 October 2007 - 05:45 PM There was a thread running about this paticular conversion on one of the forums only a couple of weeks ago, the chap had owned the vehicle for some time I believe but was having problems obtaining an exhaust downpipe as it is a bespoke part and the original converter does not supply them any more. Can't be sure of the forum but I think it might have been Mudclub, check it out as it ran for quite some while. I was beginning to think that Frank was the only person who'd ever had this conversion as everywhere I've asked he always gets a mention I've sent him a mail but haven't heard back yet. Litch, I spend quite a lot of time on Mud Club and haven't seen anything there (I've also asked the same question as above there too). It was quite a long thread and there was a lot of useful information about sourcing bespoke spares etc. It can't have been more than a few weeks ago so I think I will have to go to each forum in turn and do a search for my own posts until I find it. Frank has since come back to me with a bit more info and, coupled with that thread on the other forum (which Frank has also contributed to) I'm starting to piece it together. Generally speaking a Direct injection engine either has no glow plugs or doesn't really need them to start. Indirect engine always needs glows to cold start. Take some photos of the pump and engine and we'll help identify, also what year? __________________________________Nat If You Open Your Mind Too Much Your Brain Will Fall Out No Nonsense Vehicles from Japan Back to top peeprox1991Just got MTsJoined: 28 Dec 2007Odometer: 424Location: Mid Devon Posted: Sun May 18, 2008 5:51 pm Post subject: i took some pictures, hopefully you can determine what you need to know from them. the engine conversion was done in 95, I'm not sure if it was a new engine or from a donor van though. its an intercooled, 2.5 litre turbo diesel (you can see what i think is the injector bolted to the right side of the block as you look at it, its attached to the bottom of that round bit. this is what i think is the injection pump, it has 4 metal tubes coming out of it and going up under the plastic cover on top of the engine. i cant see any markings or stickers because its hidden right down on the side of the engine, this picture was taken holding the camera down by the engine and taking a blind shot. and the top of the injector, the bit you can see when you open the bonnet. it starts on the turn of the key which i would assume means its direct injection. thanks for your patience about this, i still have a long way to go on the mechanics of engines. __________________________________"Ophelia was a circus queen, The female cannonball, Projected through five flaming hoops, To wild and shocked applause." It looks like a Bosch/Nippon Injection pump, which is fairly safe on Veg, however a Direct Injection engine can suffer Piston Ring Gumming from cold starting and long idling on veg oil, this is best overcome with a Twin Tank kit or alaternately run it on very low blends of veg oil and Normal diesel. __________________________________Nat If You Open Your Mind Too Much Your Brain Will Fall Out No Nonsense Vehicles from Japan Back to top peeprox1991Just got MTsJoined: 28 Dec 2007Odometer: 424Location: Mid Devon Posted: Sun May 25, 2008 1:35 pm Post subject: so 80/20 diesel/veg? or safer at 90/10? anything is a start. twin tanks a bit out of my league at the moment, but id like to try and make at least some use of the 2500 litres tax free a year. __________________________________"Ophelia was a circus queen, The female cannonball, Projected through five flaming hoops, To wild and shocked applause." Should be ok, but keep an eye on the sump oil - if its starts to rise then there is trouble.
